Why electrical planning matters for underfloor heating
Electric underfloor heating is a permanently-installed electrical appliance. In Spain, all fixed electrical installations must comply with the REBT (Reglamento Electrotécnico de Baja Tensión — Low Voltage Electrical Regulations) and must be carried out or supervised by a certified electrician. This is not bureaucratic box-ticking — there are genuine safety reasons why underfloor heating needs to be professionally wired.
The key risks with incorrect installation: overloading existing circuits, incorrect RCD protection, thermostat sensor placement errors (leading to overheating), and using unsuitable cable types. Our certified electricians eliminate all of these risks and provide documentation that your installation is compliant.
What does our planning and wiring service include?
- Load calculation: We calculate the total wattage of your system and verify your consumer unit has sufficient capacity
- Dedicated circuit: Where required, we install a dedicated circuit for the underfloor heating with appropriate RCD protection
- Thermostat wiring: Thermostat cable run from the floor to the wall mounting position
- Sensor installation: Floor temperature sensor installed in the correct position (critical for accurate temperature control)
- Connection to consumer unit: Safe, certified connection with correct breaker rating
- Thermostat programming: We programme the heating schedule and explain the controls
- Electrical certificate: Documentation of the installation for your records and insurance
Thermostat options — from basic to smart
Standard programmable thermostat
The most cost-effective option. Set weekly heating schedules (time/temperature by day). LCD display, simple to use. Temperature control by floor sensor, air sensor or combined. Price: included in our installation packages, or €45–€80 supply only.
Smart WiFi thermostat
Control your heating from your smartphone from anywhere in the world. Ideal for holiday rental properties — you can pre-heat the apartment before guests arrive. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Price: €80–€150.
Multi-zone systems
If you're installing heating in multiple rooms, we can design a multi-zone system with separate thermostats for each room and a central control hub. You heat only the rooms you're using, reducing energy consumption.
Spanish electrical regulations (REBT) — what you need to know
The REBT (ITC-BT-38 specifically covers underfloor heating) requires:
- Heating circuits must be protected by a residual current device (RCD/ELCB) with ≤30mA sensitivity
- The circuit must be sized for continuous duty (100% load factor)
- Cable must be rated for the temperature it will be exposed to
- Thermostat must include a temperature limiter preventing floor surface exceeding 45°C
- Installation must be certified by an authorised electrician
All our installations comply fully with REBT. You receive a signed certificate of compliance with every installation.
